Oils
may prevent disease formation by coating the plant surface and impeding
or suffocating fungal spores.
Northover
and Schneider reported in 1996 that petroleum, canola and soybean oil
sprays were active as pre-lesion treatments and antisporulative on powdery
mildew of greenhouse grown grapes.
We
have conducted greenhouse and field trials demonstrating that soybean
oil sprays can reduce the occurrence of powdery mildew on dogwoods.
